Yakshagana (ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ) is a traditional theatre form that originated in the coastal districts of Karnataka, India — particularly in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Shimoga, and Kasaragod in Kerala. It is one of the most vibrant and colourful folk art forms of Karnataka.
Yakshagana combines dance, music, dialogue, costume, make-up and stage techniques to present stories from Hindu epics like the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and the Puranas. The performances are typically held overnight and are accompanied by a traditional percussion ensemble called the Chende and Maddale.
PK Jain Creations is dedicated to preserving and promoting Yakshagana through high-quality photography. Our archive features 169+ Yakshagana artists from across coastal Karnataka, captured in their full traditional costume and makeup.
